Responsibility for handling agreements related to sponsored project activities is distributed across various UCLA administrative offices based on the nature of the transactions and sponsors.
The Office of Contract and Grant Administration (OCGA) is responsible for reviewing and authorizing proposals for submission and for interpreting, negotiating and accepting agreements with government, non-profit, and higher education organizations. These transactions fall into three broad types of agreements from Federal, State and local government sponsors and non-profit entities:
Grants: Financial assistance mechanisms to support the conduct of research or other activities as described in a general scope of work. This includes subgrants, agreements under a prime grant award to another entity that provides financial assistance to UCLA to support the conduct of research or other activities as described in a general scope of work.
Cooperative Agreements: Awards in which the funding agency remains involved in the research or project during its performance by the receiving agency.
Contracts: Agreements to provide support for research or other activities in return for a set statement of work or deliverables. This includes subcontracts, agreements under a prime contract to another entity that provides support for research or other activities in return for a set statement of work or deliverables.
Incoming and Outgoing Subawards and Subcontracts:
- Subawards: Awards that are provided from a Pass-Through Entity ("PTE") to a subrecipient so that the subrecipient can carry out a portion of the PTE’s scope of work under a prime grant or cooperative agreement.
- Subcontracts: Agreements under a prime contract to another entity that provides support for research or other activities in return for a set statement of work or deliverables.
In some cases, OCGA and other research administration offices may collaborate on aspects of the negotiation of the agreement.

- Take the Wilshire Southbound Route and get off at Lindbrook and Westwood
- Cross Westwood Boulevard toward the Hammer Museum and continue south on Westwood
- Turn left onto Wilshire Boulevard and enter the lobby through the second entrance (first entrance is the Hammer Museum)
