In May 2026, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) will implement several policy changes:

Managing Multiple eRA Commons Accounts

Historically, eRA Commons permitted users to maintain separate accounts for scientific and administrative roles. Moving forward, users should consolidate their accounts into a single profile linked to Login.gov. Beginning May 18, 2026, a window will prompt users to request account consolidation, enabling the mapping of their eRA Commons account to Login.gov. Only one eRA Commons username can be associated with a Login.gov account. Users with multiple accounts are encouraged to consolidate them promptly. A tutorial is available to guide this process, along with additional information in the NIH Extramural Nexus Post.

Researchers transferring between organizations will need to toggle between their current and previous institutions to complete specific tasks. Instructions on how to change your affiliated organization are also provided.
